Health practitioners share knowledge and tips on how to improve medicine safety

5 September 2023

Medicine safety was the focus of 2 recent industry webinars. These webinars explored how SafeScript NSW, the state’s real-time prescription monitoring program, is a valuable tool to support prescribers and pharmacists in clinical decision making.

One year on since the statewide rollout of SafeScript NSW, it was an opportunity for health practitioners to hear from their peers about best practice approaches.

Both webinars explored the importance of a patient-centric approach to prescribing and dispensing monitored medicines.

Discussions highlighted the need for open communication between everyone involved including patients, prescribers and pharmacists.

In partnership with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP)

The first webinar in May was a partnership with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP). The panel included fellow GPs, a pharmacist and a consumer representative. GP and addiction medicine specialist, Dr Hester Wilson, said SafeScript NSW can support conversations and foster a multi- disciplinary team approach to medication safety.

“SafeScript NSW helps GPs to have conversations with patients and pharmacists, fostering therapeutic alliance and a collaborative relationship,” Dr Wilson said.

In partnership with the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA)

Discussions continued in June as part of a partnership with the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA).

This event shared insights from peers through a panel consisting of 3 pharmacists.

The discussion focused on how pharmacists could get the most out of the system, when dispensing monitored medicines.

“SafeScript NSW is such a valuable tool. I’d encourage your whole pharmacy team to get onboard with the system so you can incorporate it into your workflow,” said Karen Carter, community pharmacist.

More than 23,000 eligible prescribers and pharmacists are using SafeScript NSW to improve medicine safety.

eHealth NSW is continuing to make regular enhancements to the SafeScript NSW system, with new functions coming later this year.
