Murrumbidgee Local Health District first in line for ePrescribing Pilot

24 November 2023

The eHealth NSW Virtual Medication Management (VMM) team recently visited Murrumbidgee Local Health District to meet with stakeholders trialling a new electronic prescribing (ePrescribing) tool. Clinicians at MLHD are part of the pilot program rolling out in early 2024.

This tool will enable NSW Health clinicians including nurse practitioners to write and send ePrescriptions directly to the patients’ local pharmacy. This will help clinicians capture and review a more comprehensive picture of a patient’s prescribing history. The tool also supports pharmacists by making the dispensing process easier, faster, and safer.

How does it work?

The VMM ePrescribing pilot will use the existing Electronic Medication Management (eMeds) module in the Electronic Medical Record (eMR). It will reduce administrative tasks such as the handling of paper prescriptions and help minimise risks by reducing transcribing and drug interaction errors.

Due to current PBS Commonwealth Government restrictions for NSW Health clinicians VMM can initially only be piloted in Commonwealth-funded aged care beds.

Boorowa Multipurpose Service (MPS) facility within Murrumbidgee LHD will be the first to pilot the tool, with Western NSW Local Health District to follow.
