Medical imaging solution continues to deliver safer patient care across the state

17 August 2023

Clinicians across six hospitals in the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD) are benefitting from access to centralised patient imaging histories as part of the ongoing rollout of Radiology Information Systems & Picture Archiving & Communications System (RIS-PACS).

RIS-PACS is a state-of-the-art medical imaging system which allows medical imaging histories as well as comparison images and reports to be tracked in real time from image request, through to diagnosis no matter where a patient is treated within the NSW Health system.

District Manager at ISLHD Medical Imaging Service, Peter Turner, said there were many benefits of RIS-PACS including improved diagnostic processes, increased clinical information sharing and improved security of patient information.

“This project demonstrates how eHealth NSW and LHD collaboration, when raised to the level of true partnership, leverages capability change inherent in ICT solutions to produce substantial, positive, and ongoing clinical and operational benefits for patients, clinicians and the communities we all serve,” he said.

RIS-PACS is live across 10 local health districts (LHDs) and specialty health networks (SHNs) with a total of 51 hospitals across NSW Health using the system.

RIS-PACS continues to be rolled out across the state, with Sydney LHD going live with the solution in July 2023. Far West LHD and Western NSW LHD deployments will begin in August 2023.
