Enterprise Data Lake: Sharing best practice for data analysis

3 August 2023

More than 200 representatives from across NSW Health recently met to share their latest data analysis insights and discuss best practice uses for the NSW Health Enterprise Data Lake solution.

eHealth NSW hosted the workshop, with speakers from Southern NSW and Northern Sydney Local Health Districts (LHDs) showcasing how they use the data lake to help deliver better patient care.

Improving the data analysis process

The Enterprise Data Lake is designed to make analysing data more efficient for NSW Health organisations.

Developed by eHealth NSW, the solution provides users with access to a virtualised 'data lake' environment, where their organisation's clinical and corporate data is replicated in a central location, in near real-time.

Sharing best practice

Mauricio Olivera, Business Analytics Manager and Mohammed Zilani, Data Scientist from Southern NSW LHD shared how they use the data lake for waitlist management to reduce waiting times for elective surgeries. The team is also using data lake powered analysis to help reduce the acute length of stay for inpatients.

Martyn Brookes, Associate Director, Performance and Analytics, from Northern Sydney LHD presented on how the data lake helped the district to create several dashboards. These include the Stroke Clinical Indicators dashboard, and the Nurse Screening Task Monitor and Discharge Task Monitor to improve efficiency in their wards.

Dr Mostafa Shaikh, Senior Data Scientist from eHealth NSW explained how the data lake's advanced Data Analytics Platform (DAP) is being used to improve the early prediction of sepsis in patients presenting to NSW Health emergency departments.

"We used the Data Analytics Platform and Enterprise Data Lake to re-invent the system architecture of predictive sepsis on our virtual private cloud, while assessing the capability and ease of use of the platform. We have found the technology to work as a virtual data analytics lab on the cloud for quick prototyping, building, and deploying models in an easy and time saving manner," Dr Shaikh said.
