Celebrating World Immunisation Week: AIR Integration Project elevates vaccination reporting

24 April 2024

World Immunisation Week takes place every year during April to raise awareness about the importance of vaccines in reducing diseases and preventing deaths. This week, eHealth NSW celebrates World Immunisation Week 2024: Humanly Possible with a spotlight on the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Integration project.

It is now easier for NSW Health clinicians to meet their mandatory obligations to report vaccinations, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the teams that delivered the AIR Integration Project including clinicians and staff at NSW Health.

In 2023, NSW Health became the first Australian jurisdiction to successfully integrate National Immunisation Program (NIP) vaccination records to the AIR. This significant milestone ensures vaccines administered in NSW Health facilities are reported to the register to comply with the Federal Government’s mandate.

The eHealth NSW team worked in partnership with Health Protection NSW to migrate over 650,000 historical vaccination records held by NSW Health. These records, sourced from various patient record systems such as Electronic Medication Management (eMeds) and the Electronic Record for Intensive Care (eRIC), posed a significant logistical hurdle. Now, the integration helps minimise manual data collection and ultimately saves clinicians’ time.

As National Immunisation Week 2024 unfolds, the successful implementation of the AIR Integration Project leaves NSW better positioned to monitor and improve immunisation coverage.
