Virtual technology delivers connected healthcare at new Prince of Wales Hospital

19 April 2023

eHealth NSW's audio visual and collaboration technology now features throughout the newly opened Prince of Wales Hospital's Acute Services Building (ASB). This world-class hospital is using technology to deliver connected healthcare, by providing real-time access and collaboration opportunities for clinicians across New South Wales.

The state-of-the-art building, located at the Randwick Health and Innovation Precinct includes a new and expanded Emergency Department (ED), Intensive Care Unit (ICU), digital operating theatres and 5 levels of inpatient units.

Leveraging eHealth NSW unified communications technology, the new building includes 48 Health Managed Meeting Rooms (HMMR). The technology in these rooms helps to streamline clinical meetings and support collaboration. Clinicians, patients and carers can all ‘dial in’ and connect from any location across the state.

“All meeting rooms have high-quality screens to allow clinicians to review medical imagery and patient information,” said Don Little, Modern Meeting Space Product Owner, eHealth NSW.

“The NSW Telestroke Service is a great example of how the rooms can be used to review cases in multidisciplinary team meetings. It connects regional and rural hospitals with Sydney-based stroke specialists which helps to deliver critical lifesaving care.”

Handover spaces and write-up rooms are also available to allow clinicians to easily collaborate and ensure continuity of patient care.

The building design also supports simulation-based education for clinicians using the latest technology.

“The new ICU simulation lab and control room enables clinicians to learn the technical skills needed for ICU, without leaving the ward,” Don added.

The Acute Services Building at the Prince of Wales hospital supports new and innovative approaches to acute healthcare. The project is a partnership between South Eastern Sydney Local Health District, Health Infrastructure and the University of NSW. Harnessing eHealth NSW’s digital technology, the purpose-built facilities will deliver contemporary clinical practice, now and into the future.
