Student-driven initiative at the heart of Health Hackathon

18 January 2024

eHealth NSW recently partnered with the Prevention Education and Research Unit (PERU) from the Western Sydney Local Health District, the NSW Department of Education’s Regional Industry Education Partnership (RIEP) program, and the NSW Ministry of Health to host the inaugural Health Hackathon.

The Health Hackathon aimed to build skills and introduce students to the wide variety of career opportunities at NSW Health while focusing on improving population health.

Thirty-five students from four high schools in western Sydney were offered the opportunity to spend two days fully engaged in crafting influential health campaigns for their school community.

Building blocks of success

Throughout the event, students received guidance from industry leaders with diverse expertise in public health, gamification, communications, social media, and artificial intelligence.

Joanna Cai, Digital Communications Officer, inspired students with her career journey from intern to team member. She also educated the students on the basics of a good campaign, asking them to consider their objective, audience and channels.

Samantha Isnard, Digital Communications Manager, provided tips to students on delivering engaging presentations.

Karl Graves, Training Consultant, introduced gamification and game-based learning and how it can be a fun and interactive way for students to use to promote their health campaign.

Harmeet Chhabra, Director, Data Warehouse & Business Intelligence, discussed the future of AI in healthcare, the challenges to be considered and how to prepare for a world with AI.

The winning team crafted a TikTok video incorporating elements from popular trends. They seamlessly blended dance sequences with a straightforward message: you don’t need to vape to have fun.

The Health Hackathon, led in partnership by PERU (WSLHD), eHealth, the Ministry of Health and the Department of Education’s RIEP program, demonstrates the significant impact of collaborative efforts in fostering innovative solutions and preparing the next generation for meaningful contributions to the field of public health.
