At eHealth NSW, we're proud to create meaningful pathways for career exploration and development for the next generation of digital health innovators. Through hands-on experiences and supportive learning environments, we empower individuals to shape their future in digital health.
Over the past few months, we’ve been piloting a Cloud Engineering job shadowing program with students from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS).
This initiative gives students the chance to see cloud engineering in action and gain a deeper understanding of the roles and responsibilities of cloud and principal engineers. By shadowing professionals during a two week sprint, students observe daily tasks and can ask questions in real time.
Real-life on the job experience
Danielle Johnson, Delivery Manager in the Cloud & Enterprise Infrastructure Services team and program facilitator at eHealth NSW, says the interns have already gained valuable exposure across both platform development and operations.
“They've spent time shadowing five of our engineers, including one principal and four cloud engineers," says Danielle.
"They are now at the stage where they’ll apply their learnings to support our cloud cost monitoring product, Cloudability, under the guidance of Alan Ouyang, Cloud Optimisation Lead." - Danielle Johnson, Delivery Manager, Cloud & Enterprise Infrastructure Services team, eHealth NSW
"The experience has also been incredibly rewarding for our senior engineers, who’ve enjoyed giving back and are excited to see our interns integrate their learnings.”
Partnering for the future
The program is part of the three-year Industry Degree Academy (IDeA) cadetship offered by UTS to students in the Bachelor of Computing Science and Bachelor of Cyber Security programs.
The cadetship places students with industry partners like eHealth NSW, where they gain hands on experience, complete certifications, and contribute to real-world projects, while employers benefit from a direct talent pipeline and help shape graduate outcomes.
Currently, the program is being piloted with two interns, whose feedback and experiences will help inform future iterations of the cloud engineering intern program.
One of the students, Saaleha Kadiwala, says the experience has been instrumental in shaping her skills, confidence, and career aspirations.
“The program has been incredibly valuable in helping me explore where my interests and strengths truly lie," says Saaleha.
"While I had the opportunity to gain exposure to cloud engineering and appreciated learning about the problem-solving and technical aspects involved, it also helped me realise that my interests may be better aligned with other tech areas like data engineering." - Saaleha Kadiwala, UTS intern in eHealth NSW's Cloud Engineering job shadowing program.
"Having this clarity early on is something I’m really grateful for as it allowed me to reflect more intentionally on the kind of roles I’d like to pursue in the future, and the environments where I can thrive. The experience has been a pivotal moment in helping me reflect and gain clarity on where I want to go next in my career.”
Career pipeline programs at eHealth NSW
At eHealth NSW, we understand the importance of creating career pipeline programs that support passionate students in exploring and developing their future pathways.
Alongside the Cloud Engineering job shadowing pilot, our Internship Program,, now in its eighth year, has provided more than 150 university students with 12 months of hands-on experience across disciplines including data and analytics, cloud services, communications, cyber and information security, and project and change management.
We’re excited to welcome the program again in 2026, in partnership with the Single Digital Patient Record Implementation Authority (SDPRIA), and are now accepting applications for the 2026 cohort.
