eHealth Strategy
for NSW Health

A digitally enabled and integrated health system delivering patient-centred health experiences and quality health outcomes

eHealth Strategy for NSW Health 2016–2026

The statewide eHealth Strategy is aligned to the key strategic priorities of NSW Health.

It brings to life NSW Health’s vision of a sustainable health system that delivers outcomes that matter to patients, is personalised, invests in wellness, and is digitally enabled. Spanning 10 years, the strategy sets out guidance for digital health investment, so NSW Health can harness innovations and meet growing healthcare demands long into the future. It outlines seven key focus areas, each one covering the initiatives and investment needed, to deliver effective digital health solutions and services.

  • Clinical applications help doctors, nurses, allied health clinicians and managers provide safe, quality care, and enable patients to control their own healthcare.

  • Support a connected healthcare system by enabling the safe and seamless sharing of digital patient information between healthcare providers across NSW, and with the patient themselves.

  • Enable NSW Health staff to work efficiently and effectively and ultimately provide support for clinicians to deliver optimal patient care.

  • Enhance data management, analytics and health intelligence.

  • Deliver a statewide technology ecosystem which supports the move to integrated and shared care across NSW Health.

  • Enhance patient and provider access to digital health information and services.

  • Harness the power of innovation, cultivate a culture of innovation and collaboration in a bid to fast-track the best ideas, maximise return on investment and build eHealth capacity across the state.

The three horizons

The Strategy identified three distinct horizons in the digital transformation of NSW Health. Firstly, the strategy seeks to achieve consistent foundations, moving on to increase integration and finally enable the personalisation of healthcare.

Each horizon is characterised by a different transformational challenge:

  1. Moving from a paper / analogue system to a digital one
  2. Shifting from a fragmented to a more integrated approach to service provision
  3. Shifting from a provider-centric to a patient-centric paradigm

Strategy Horizons

Many of the initiatives articulated in the eHealth Strategy for NSW Health 2016-2026 have already been realised. Yet there is more to do.
